The Walnut celebrated the nation's bicentennial and its own 168th birthday by
hosting the Emmett Kelly Jr. Circus on February 1, 1976. Kelly followed in
his father's footsteps in the entertainment industry. Kelly Sr. was recognized
as one of the most famous tramp clowns of the circus. Kelly Jr. toured with
several circuses, entertained at over 2,800 hospitals, and was featured in
print and commercial advertisements.
