Walnut Street Theatre's Professional Apprentice Program provides a training ground for early career professionals to bridge the gap between education and the professional world. It provides hands-on experience working alongside professionals in a specific, concentrated area. The program is designed to provide a season of intensive education and work experience in one of several aspects of theatre operation.

Acting Apprenticeships

The Acting Apprentices rehearse and perform a four-show repertoire, touring to schools in the Philadelphia area as Walnut Street Theatre's Touring Outreach Company. Acting Apprentices teach workshops and acting coaching sessions, are cast in two mainstage Kids Series shows and will audition for EMC understudy opportunities for three mainstage productions.

Audience Services Apprenticeships

Audience Services Apprentices work with the House Managers in all duties before, during and after productions for both our 1,100 seat mainstage and 90 seat studio theatre. They assist with our volunteer usher program to ensure a positive front of house experience for our 350,000+ patrons annually. They also help organize, maintain, and assisting customers with the theatre gift shop. Other duties include greeting patrons attending Walnut Street Theatre pre show dinners and at special events. The Audience Service Apprentices will also house manage all five productions in our studio theatre. This apprenticeship is perfect for those interested in both the performing arts and hospitality management.

Carpentry Apprenticeships

Apprentices work with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director and IATSE carpenters to build 20 shows for the various productions created by the Walnut Street Theatre in our scene shop, which is located off-premises in North East Philadelphia. Some of the tasks for the carpentry apprentices include woodworking, welding (steel & aluminum), mechanical implementation, and theatrical rigging. Carpentry apprentices will also assist the ATD in loading-in and installing scenery for up to five shows in our 80-seat studio theatre. Apprentices will work some nights and weekends. Apprentices may have design opportunities for Walnut Street Theatre's children's shows on the mainstage.

Casting & Literary Management Apprenticeships

The Casting & Literary Management Apprentice assists in the organization and running of auditions both in Philadelphia and New York for mainstage and Studio 3 productions. On the Literary side, the Apprentice handles correspondence with playwrights and aids in the evaluation of script submissions.

Costumes Apprenticeships

Apprentices assist the Costume Shop Manager in building and altering costumes for five mainstage shows (3 musicals and 2 straight plays), five studio shows, five mainstage children's shows and the Education Outreach series. Apprentices may have design opportunities for Walnut Street Theatre's children's shows on the mainstage. Apprentices will act as the wardrobe crew for some shows on the mainstage (including children's shows), and work some nights and weekends.

Education Apprenticeships

The Education Apprentice will directly participate in the planning and maintaining of various educational programs, including: being the primary teaching artist in our award winning Adopt-a-School program creating curriculum based theatre lessons to enhance student learning and spending 2 days per week teaching in a Philadelphia K-8 school, running an after school Drama Club for our Adopted School, the researching, writing and designing of Study Guides; assisting in the coordination of The Theatre School, Camp Walnut and the Touring Outreach Company; and participating in workshops and residencies at local schools.

Fundraising & Individual Giving Apprenticeships

The Fundraising, Individual Giving Apprentice learns about all aspects of fundraising and development for a major non-profit theatre, working closely with individual giving (database work), special events, major donors and Board members. This is a very hands-on opportunity to be a significant part of a five-person fundraising team.

General Management Apprenticeships

The General Management Apprentice works directly with the Company Manager and Managing Director to assist in a wide-range of tasks in running the business on a daily basis, including the handling of artist contracts, housing and travel arrangements; coordinating the annual national tour; scheduling all activities that occur in the theatre; contracting all rental space for rehearsal and performance; planning opening night parties, company luncheons and other company events; working with the 7 unions employed at the theatre; and managing office supplies and computer equipment. This apprenticeship is perfect for those interested in working in commercial or non-profit theatre management. The position exposes the apprentice to all aspects of company management and managing a theatre.

Marketing Apprenticeships

The Marketing Apprentice works closely with the Director of Marketing and Marketing Assistant on: managing and processing all group sales orders for the theatre; proof reading; assisting with displays; and handling correspondence, mailings and other general office duties.

Props Apprenticeships

Apprentices work with the IATSE crew and Props Manager to shop and build five mainstage shows, five studio shows, five mainstage children's shows, and the Education Outreach series in Walnut Street Theatre's shop, which is located off-premises in North East Philadelphia. Properties Apprentices also assist in managing prop rentals, maintaining the prop shop, and delivery/load-in of props to the theatre. Props apprentices will be called upon to assist Props Manager in tech, and will be expected to work some nights and weekends. Ideal candidates would show flexibility, be comfortable working in a team environment, and be eager to learn from theatre professionals. Apprentices may have design opportunities for Walnut Street Theatre's children's shows on the mainstage.

Properties Management Apprenticeships

Apprentice works with the Properties Management to manage Walnut Street Theatre's busy Prop shop, which is located off-premises in North East Philadelphia. Apprentice assists with payroll, purchasing, managing budgets, rentals, shipping/receiving, and other various office duties. Apprentice will also assist in shopping for and building props for up to 20 shows, as skill level dictates. Apprentice will assist the Props Manager during tech (delivering props, taking notes, etc.), and will work some nights and weekends. Ideal candidate would be comfortable working in a scene shop office environment, and show flexibility and self-motivation.

Public Relations Apprenticeships

The Public Relations Apprentice will primarily assist the Communications Manager to: write and prepare press releases, public service announcements, invites, mailings, and press kits; organize and file press clippings and photos for Walnut Street Theatre's archives; research plays on the Mainstage, Independence Studio on 3 and WST for Kids Series; proof read; attend all publicity photo shoots; create promotional videos for productions; expand the Walnut's social media presence; and assist with promotional appearances, as requested.

Social Media and Digital Marketing Apprenticeships

The Social Media Apprentice reports to the Communications Manager and is responsible for assisting in developing, executing and managing digital marketing strategies and programs, on platforms that include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Snapchat and more. They will be responsible for organic and sponsored content and will assist in the development of online and digital advertising campaigns. The apprentice's duties include graphic/video design and administrative duties that crossover between marketing, public relations, promotions, social/digital media, and events as needed.

Scenic Painting Apprenticeships

Apprentice assists the Scenic Charge and Union crew in painting up to 20 shows for the various productions created by the Walnut Street Theatre in our scene shop, which is located off premises in North East Philadelphia. Apprentice may have design opportunities for Walnut Street Theatre's children's shows on the mainstage. Apprentice could be called upon to work some nights and weekends.

Shop Management Apprenticeships

Apprentice works with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director and Properties Manager to manage Walnut Street Theatre’s busy scene shop. The Shop Management Apprentice assists with payroll, purchasing, managing budgets, answering phone calls, shipping/receiving, and other general office management tasks. Apprentice will have potential opportunities for drafting and other technical design work commensurate upon the applicant’s skill level. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, flexible, eager to learn from theatre professionals, have a sense of humor, and be comfortable working on a team in an shop/office environment.

Stage Crew Apprenticeships

Apprentice acts as a member of the run crew for all mainstage performances, assists in the load-in and load-out of all shows, and works alongside our house IATSE crew (including the head flyman, head carpenter, head sound engineer, head electrician and head props), as well as additional run crew as needed by show. The stage crew apprentice has the opportunity to work in the scene shop while certain shows are running on the mainstage and when they are not needed as backstage crew. Apprentice will work a regular show schedule (8-10 shows/week), including nights and weekends, as well as long hours during load-in, tech, and strike. Must be able to lift 50-75 lbs. Flexibility and positive attitude a necessity.

Production Management Apprenticeships

The Production Management apprentice will assist the Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager in various office tasks, including maintaining budgets, payroll, sourcing, purchasing, and archives. Apprentice will be in charge of managing all production management aspects of the studio show tour, and cover some stage management duties on the mainstage or in the studio space as needed. Ideal candidate will be self-motivated, eager to learn from theatre professionals, and comfortable working on a team in an office environment. Flexibility, a sense of humor, and experience with lighting and sound is helpful. Position holds some night and weekend hours.

Stage Management Apprenticeships

  • Mainstage Stage Management
    Apprentices will assist the two staff AEA stage managers in pre-production, rehearsal and performances of all five mainstage productions consisting of 3 large-scale musicals and 2 straight plays. Duties include: assisting rehearsal, maintaining paperwork, understudy rehearsals, training and working with a crew of IATSE stagehands through tech and the run of the shows. Ideal candidate will motivated by working in a team environment, eager to learn, and be a good-problem-solver. Night and weekend hours are required.

  • Studio 3 Stage Management
    Apprentice will assist the AEA Studio 3 stage manager for all studio productions from pre-production to the closing performance, playing an integral role as show crew backstage. Candidate must be self-motivated, and have a wide range of backstage skills. Experience with electrics, wardrobe, and sound is helpful. Ideal candidate will be a team-player and able to make quick decisions on their feet. A positive attitude and sense of humor is helpful for this position. Night and weekend hours are required.

Subscriptions Apprenticeships

The Subscriptions Apprentice is responsible for ticket sales, distribution and ticket fulfillment for over 50,000 Walnut Street Theatre Subscribers (most subscribed theatre in the world!), working closely with the Subscriptions Manager and the rest of the staff on areas such as customer service and database management.

Wigs and Wardrobe Apprenticeships

The Wigs and Wardrobe Apprentice assists wig designers and the costume shop manager in construction, refurbishing, alteration, preparation, styling, and maintenance of wigs, hair pieces, and facial hair. Apprentice will work on all necessary mainstage shows, studio shows, and The Walnut Street Theatre's outreach education series. Apprentice may have design opportunities for the self-produced Walnut Street Theatre Kids' Series. This apprentice will also be on the wardrobe crew for mainstage shows as needed. Qualified candidate will have experience in wig/facial hair construction and styling. Candidate should be self-motivated and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Position requires night time and weekend hours.

Applications for the 2018-2019 season will be accepted beginning February 1, 2018. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

To Apply: Submit the online application form. Application will be available February 1, 2018. In addition to completing all required fields, you will need to attach a current photo, your resume, and a cover letter stating why you are a good fit for the apprentice program.

Please Note: Applications will be accepted through this online form ONLY, beginning February 1, 2018 until all positions have been filled. Please do not submit any application materials through regular mail as they will not be reviewed. Should the Walnut Staff require any additional materials, such as work samples or portfolios, you will be contacted. The apprenticeships are full time commitments and cannot be completed while students are still pursuing their undergraduate degrees.

Timeline: Interviews begin in March and are concluded by mid-June. You will be notified if you are eliminated at any time during the process.

For Actors: Each acting applicant must submit a video audition consisting of a 16 bar selection from a classic Broadway song– think Rogers and Hammerstein or Kander and Ebb. You must use piano or recorded accompaniment. Please post your video to any video or file-sharing service (YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, Google Docs, etc.) and provide the URL in the application. Auditions are scheduled for April 28th. Applicants selected for an audition will be contacted by the end of March.
