1920

A new play by influential English drama critic William Archer, The Green Goddess had its world premiere at Walnut Street Theatre. The show was performed as part of the gala opening night of the newly renovated theatre in December 1920. George Arliss led the mostly British cast, and the play was a triumph for the actor. He went on to perform his role over 1,000 times and reprised it for the 1929 film, for which he received an Oscar nomination. The play was so popular it even inspired Green Goddess salad dressing, created by a chef at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
