1901

In February 1901 James A. Herne (center) returned to the Walnut, where he had once worked as a stock actor. The actor and playwright played father to his real-life daughter in this production of Sag Harbor. Sadly, this would be his last run at the Walnut. Herne was not well and withdrew from the show during its run in Chicago. He died at his home a few weeks later. The woman seated with Herne is his daughter, Chrystal Herne, who would go on to have a successful stage career throughout the early decades of the 20th century. The other gentleman pictured is none-other than Lionel Barrymore, reprising his first Broadway-credited role.
