1903

In 1903 Douglas Fairbanks made his Walnut Street Theatre debut in a supporting role in The Pit. Fairbanks would return two more times to the Walnut, starring in The Man of the Hour and supporting Thomas Wise in A Gentleman from Mississippi. Fairbanks soon after made the crossover into the movie business, where he went on to help form United Artists Studios and married "America's Sweetheart," movie star Mary Pickford. This was Hollywood's first major celebrity marriage. (Photograph courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
