1942

Katharine Hepburn's only appearance at Walnut Street Theatre was in March 1942. She played a New England widow who operates a boarding house in Philip Barry's Without Love. Hepburn had previously worked with Barry on the successful stage and screen versions of The Philadelphia Story. In Without Love, Hepburn and her leading man, Elliot Nugent, were mismatched, and the production garnered mixed reviews. She was better suited to her partner in the film version of 1945, when she played opposite Spencer Tracey. (Photograph courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
