Comedies were especially popular in wartime America. The Doughgirls, starring (from left) Dorris Nolau, Virginia Field, Arlene Francis, and Arlene Whelan, played at the Walnut in the 1942-43 season. Directed by George F. Kaufman, this comedy about gold-diggers was set in wartime Washington. A film version was released in November 1944.
