Known as "The First Lady of the American Theatre," Helen Hayes' career spanned 80 years. This American actress is one of only two women to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. She has had several theatres named for her, including the current Helen Hayes Theatre, a Broadway house located on West 44th Street in Manhattan. In 1983 the Helen Hayes Awards were established in Washington, DC, encouraging performers to reach for their goals as she did. Hayes made her Walnut debut as Maggie Wylie in a revival of James M. Barrie's What Every Woman Knows in January 1927. (Photograph courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
