In the mid-1930s the Walnut presented Yiddish Theatre. Maurice Schwartz, the leading producer of Yiddish drama and often called the "Yiddish Barrymore," appeared in The Water Carrier in spring 1937. Schwartz (left) is shown here in one of his signature roles, as the title character in Hershel, the Jester opposite Anna Appel.
