1922

Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie opened on Broadway in 1921 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that year. It tells the story of a former prostitute who falls in love, but runs into difficulty in turning her life around. In December 1922 a touring production of the play came to the Walnut, starring Pauline Lord (left) and George Marion. Lord's performance as Anna was viewed as a triumph by the Philadelphia critics.
