Jose Ferrer directed and starred in the pre-Broadway tryout of The Shrike in January 1952, for which he went on to win Tony Awards as both Best Director and Best Actor. He came back to direct two more productions at the Walnut: Stalag 17 in late 1952, which went on to become a movie of the same name and the inspiration for television's series Hogan's Heroes; and The Andersonville Trial in 1959 starring George C. Scott. (Photograph courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
