1947

The Iceman Cometh by Eugene O'Neill arrived at the Walnut on April 7, 1947. It had been a dozen years since the last O'Neill piece played Philadelphia, and the production was highly anticipated. The play had opened on Broadway in 1946 without an out-of-town tryout, and received mixed reviews. When the production was revived in 1956, however, it was fully realized as a masterpiece. Above is a reading of the play with the original cast and playwright Eugene O'Neill (center, in suit.) (Photograph courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
