Claudette Colbert, Hollywood's leading lady of the 1930s and 1940s, had come from a successful Broadway career in the 1920s before crossing over to film. She then made a return to theatre beginning in the late 1950s. Seated center with (left to right) Laryssa Lauret, Ludmilla Tehor, and Lynne Charnay, Colbert appeared in the 1961 pre-Broadway tryout of Julia, Jake and Uncle Joe at the Walnut. The comedy by Oriana Atkinson, wife of New York Times' drama critic Brooks Atkinson, was not a success once it reached New York. It closed after only one performance on Broadway.
