In March 1957, Tennessee Williams' Orpheus Descending played two weeks at the Walnut prior to moving to Broadway. A modern re-telling of the ancient Greek legend of Orpheus, the play was a reworking of an earlier Williams piece called Battle of Angels which closed in tryouts in 1940. The playwright is pictured here. (Photograph courtesy of the Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
